because of a very low threatlevel I guess

also you see a lot of pics from guys on the base where the troops are supposed to be safe, press pics were the troops are supposed to be cool and on the road pics where the troops just climbed out of their vehicle to smile at the camera

They try to look as low-profile i.e less frightening as possible. They don't want to scare the population by looking armed-to-teeth, they want to show that they aren't an occupation, but a peace-keeping force.

    At least that's my understanding.

Which is also the reason why we don't have Marder IFVs or Leopard MBTs in Afghanistan.

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN: Afghan students from Kabul University burn a US flag during a protest in Kabul, 12 May 2005. Some 200-300 university students demonstrated against the alleged desecration of the Koran at a US military jail in Guantanamo Bay, took to the streets of the Afghan capital in a third day of protests across the country which have left four people dead, witnesses said.

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN: Afghan policemen and ISAF soldiers stand guard at the entrance of the Kabul University, 14 May 2005. Afghanistan's US-backed government was trying to restore order after 14 people died in increasingly violent protests against the alleged desecration of the Koran by interrogators at Guantanamo Bay. Seven Afghans died 13 May, alone as security forces and enraged protesters clashed in several towns and cities at both ends of the war-ravaged country, posing fresh problems for President Hamid Karzai's efforts at rebuilding.
