    DEIR QANUN, LEBANON: Turkish soldiers with the UNIFIL inspect their weapons at their base in the southern Lebanese village of Deir Qanun Rass al-Ain, southeast of Tyre, 21 October 2006. The arrival of Turkish troops taking part in a UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon comes 88 years after the last Ottoman soldier fled and marks a turning point in Ankara's relations with Arab states. Turkey is the first Muslim nation to send troops to take part in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mission policing a ceasefire between its ally Israel and Shiite movement Hezbollah after their devastating summer war. Beirut, LEBANON: Turkish marines stand guard in front of their military ship at the port of Beirut upon the arrival 20 October 2006 of UN Turkish troops to join the enlarged peacekeeping operation policing a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. The first batch of 95 soldiers arrived on two warships, with the remaining 166 members of the team flying into the Lebanese capital to help with reconstruction after the July-August war in which more than 1,200 people died in Lebanon, mostly civilians. Their arrival comes despite vocal opposition from the war-ravaged nation's Armenian community, which accuses the Turks' Ottoman ancestors of genocide. @Zalim: Are the veterans not a bit too "young" to be veterans of the independence war? If they were 20 when they fought, the must be around 100 now, but they look pretty young for me....Perhaps veterans of the korean war?

    True. In fact only a few (less than 5) are still surviving.

    @ocean

    There are only 2 survivors from the veterans of independence war both above 100 years.

    Even the veterans of Korean War are quite old. For that matter veterans of Peace operation in Cyprus above 50 now...

    What do you mean overseas weaponry?

    As far as the small arms is concerned all of the NATO weapons, regardless of the designer, are produced in Turkey.

    All HK weapons are produced in the MKEK facility in Kirikkale such as the G3, HK-33, and MP5 weapon systems. Also MKEK produces it's own ammo for these weapons made to NATO specifications at it's plant in Ankara. http://www.mkek.gov.tr/english/hakkimizda.aspx

    All M-16A2s and M4A1 Carbines are produced at the Colt Weapons Plant in Turkey.

    The only foreign weapon systems used by Turkey that are not produced in Turkey are the Russian weapon systems used by some Jandarma and Army Special Forces units such as the Dragunov, AK-74, and PKM procured from Bulgaria and Armenia (many AK-74s are captured from Armenian soldiers who sometimes cross the Turkish Border). Rifles such as the AKM and PSL are purchased separately from Romania.

    Yes. If I remember correctly, there were slight changes in Wedgetails. Turkey ordered four of them with an option of two. Similar to Aussies, Turkish orders also may face some delays.

    If you want to response to Ddavid in France vs. Turkey thread, the short answer is he is right that France builds a larger portion of their military arsenal domestically. The longer answer is around %45 of Turkish military requirements are locally provided. The last time I remember, the target was 70% around 2010.
