Dunno if this is the thread to ask, but I watched a video of an Ottoman (Janissary?) marching band lately.
I noticed that in a particular march, every three or four steps they turned to the side. I was wondering why they did it....Is it supposed to be a salute of sorts or allowing the bystanders to see them?
BTW......that's one sexy-looking ship.
It is called "Mehter walk" (or Mehter march), "Mehter" being the name of the military band. They begin marching with right foot first and after three steps, they turn halfway right and salute, then three steps, turn halfway left and salute and so on.
