I thought it was closer to what we refer to as a Designated Marksmans Rifle (Kinda like our M14 rifles).

I thought it was more designed for the rangers where the AK47 faded out which was 300+, but not deliberately designed for perfect accuracy like some rifles are.
In a professional hands yes, but no more then 1000 yd.
Most of the time it's - 800 yd.

Now, most of the snipers in Iraq use regular 7.62x54R ammo, maybe even from PK series machine guns. There is no Mach ammo available to anyone outside Russia (except of course handloaders in other countries).

Thats another point too. Im sure the rifles are good if kept well maintained, but where would they get match ammo from ?

What would be the accuracy with normal bullets ?

Some parts of the story smell like **** to me. I dont doubt there are fanatics like this out there, but 1000+ metre plus kills ?

Just because something is exaggerated doesn't mean its not true, who knows though.

I'm sure that with time, motivation and the right equipment any of you could learn to shoot at 800+ metres.

Oh and Harrelson - take out the TC according to the story.

Theese days in national guard I am a sharpshooter. Nothing I learned doing service. Had some basic courses, and today after training myself (after the advice what I was taught and Manuals manuals manuals manuals I could easyile hit target 600- 650 m away with a scoped G3.

Sure not that far, but proves the point you could learn alot on your own buy training.

Many stories such as this have a grain of truth. A small, small grain. I don't doubt that anyone in the insurgency who has killed 2+ GIs is a 'celebrity' of sorts. But I highly doubt there is any untrained Iraqi sniper who managed ~20 GI kills with an SVD out to 1,000 meters.

I know that last year there was talk about the 'Jackal' (or something like that), a former sniper in the Iraqi Army who began 'practicing his trade' again in Baghdad and scored ~5 kills. But I can't verify the facts in this case, either. Has anyone heard any more about this?

    Regards,
    Lokos

Although there's a lot of things that sound fake in the article, the part about people calling him "The Sniper" might be possible. In the mid 1990s almost all the suicide bombers in Israel were being carried out by bombs made by one terrorist. Even though many Israelis were looking for him, Yahya Ayash was able to avoid the Israelis were quite a while. While hiding from the Israelis he made bombs for suicide bombers and earned the nickname "The Engineer".

He was made into somewhat of a folk hero for the Palestinians. Fanciful stories were made about him being corned by Israeli soldiers and avoiding them by flying away. Between avoiding the Israelis and making bombs Ayash taught other Palestinians how to make effective bombs. After he was killed by the Israelis, some of his students continued making bombs and one of the biggest bomb makers was known as "The Electrician". So the idea of this sniper being known as the “The Sniper” and being somewhat of a celebrity among the other insurgents, I don’t find too far fetched.

Well with all this publicity, it only serves to hurt him. Chances are if he's real, US troops have heard of him and are hunting him.

sorry but this is total bulll****. you cannot learn how to snipe from a game
and a sdv only has a range of 800 meters. it is only effective over 1000 yrds with a new type of ammunition made by the russians. plus snipers always work in pairs. and the whole fake head on a stick is the oldest trick in the book. my bro in law jsut got back from iraq with the marines and when he read this he laughed beyond words. from experience he knows that the iraqis wont hit anything beyond 600 yrds. and again i stress the whole video game ****, damn i play mohaa as a sniper alot i guess im able to shoot like carlos ****ing hathcock.
