That's either very good or very lousy mine placing.
Good if they have burried mines around the visible ones.
    Lousy if they haven't.

Or maybe it was meant for nighttime.

Maybe they figured the americans (although the "americans" in this case are italians) wouldn't have thought anyone would be stupid enough to place mines like that and thought it was just a bad joke and drive right over them.

The mines could be laid out just for nuisance. That mine field you see there is actually a common tactic. Used if you in a hurry need to close of a road or entrance or whatever.
It can also be laid for the purpose of channeling the enemy to an ambush point, or the ambush could be right there.
It can also be a message like; see what we can do! Next time we even do it better, so be aware.
Don't judge that field unless you have some knowledge about the use of mines, just saying.

(What I would have done if being in charge of that mine field, is to have put out detonation cord between each mine and ****ytrapped the whole lot. That would be a bit of work to come by.)

edit; Due to how the mines are laid out, I would say that it is done by some with the knowledge on the use of AT-mines. Actually nice work to be honest.

Interesting observation: The mines are the Italian AT-mine VS 1.6. Bit ironic that it is found by the Italians.

yes,I noticed, these kind of mines are very diffused, lots of them are in Iraq since the Iran-Iraq war

According to the "Operational Support Guide for Joint Servise EOD - Iraq area of operation" the VS 1.6 is from Singapore?!?

That looks more like the VS 3.6 if you ask me.

That original image is from a series I've seen taken during the initial Coalition fighting in Iraq in March-April 2003.

    Yes

Iraq Purple Book - Operational Support Guide for Joint Service EOD for Iraq Area of Operations

    Edit:
According to an U.S. EOD handbook from A-stan the Italian VS 1.6 also has grooves* on the sides and not just around the top edge like the Singapore VS 1.6.

I'm not able to see whether the mines on the original pic has grooves on sides and top edge(Italian) or only on the top edge(Singapore)

*) I'm not sure whether grooves is the right term. But this is what I call grooves(indicated by red arrows):
