    akhm not a civil war
What would you call something like that? The war of Yugoslavian Sundering?
Yugoslavia broke up.. Serbia sponsored, organized, armed and -lead- part of serbian populatin in Croatia in war against Republic of Croatia, same republic your country gave it's recognition as independent state...the initial plan of agression was been made in earl 1980 after Tito died.. with making new military districts whos borders will be borders of occupied territory's.. your UN demarcation line's

I remember very well the oh so noble UN-troops and their .... hmm let's call it "colonial" behavior in Croatia: driving thru villages or towns with 80-90 km/h disrespecting every traffic signs, showing the middlefinger to my mother (I guess, because she was driving a "nazi"-german car with german license plates) etc etc.
And I very much remember some british UNPROFOR troop calling a woman at a gas station "stupid cu..", making comments about her body in english and having lot's of fun because she obvisously did not understand what the "gentlemen" were saying to her.

I was 17 years old when the war started and I spend only 4 to 6 weeks every year in Croatia, but I learned very quickly to dislike (or hate) all
    the UN-troops. Why??

While my family was waiting to return to their homes (the village was totally destroyed in Sept 1991. Guess who did it?? He's still hiding in Bosnia or Serbia), they had to watch UN troops en route to Bosnia with 30.000 or 90.000 liters of gasoline. Of course it was used for the vehicles only and not for "business" with the krajina serbs. They saw kenian UN soldiers (they were especially popular in Croatia) coming from Benkovac over some check-point and showing the croat refugees blocking that check-point the three-fingers (kind of serb victory sign).

It's clear that every country is trying to show to the world: We did something against the madness in that fu..... country! but ask 100 Croatians and 99 will tell you, that the UN did nothing that helped to end the war AND regain the territory that was, like it or not, croatian territory.
(Please no history lessons about four centuries, or 123 % serb population...bla bla bla). Ask the same people who did and most will say: U S A; by giving the o.k. for Operation Storm in 1995. The serb had their chance for autonomy (Z4), refused it...
What was taken by force, was regained by force.

No Yasushi Akashi made it possible for my family to return and live where they used to live for centuries (sorry for the history lesson), no Lord Carrington, no Cyrus Vance, and surely no Canadians! To make it clear: I have nothing, honestly, nothing against Canada, UK or Kenia, but realize it: those UN-soldier were no knights in shining armour or savior. To us they were just a couple of foreigners, doing their job, making good money, protecting our enemies and looking down on us.

Be honest: to you we were all the same kind of barely european, balkan-sh..! Wonder if you had some nick-name for us (well, vietnamese were gooks (sp), Iraqis are sand-nig..., what was our name?)

Were crimes commited by the Croat Army: Yes! Were serb houses burned? Yes! Did croat troops fired on canadian positions: well, I'm pretty sure they did. Why? see above! Did it ever occured to you that the whole Medak issue was brought up to be used the way "Rorke's Drift" was used following Isandlwana. OK Somalia was pretty ****ty, but look how excellent we were in Croatia. We fought the bloodthirsty Croatians, we even killed 27 of them. We didn't rescued anybody but at least we tried. Now forget Somalia and give me some medals...

In the end, the UN had one big opportunity to show how much they cared for civillians and showing how neutral they were, but they prefered to retreat, drink a rakija with the winner, hand over their weapon, jeeps and APC's and let him kill 7.000-8.000 men.

I can't comment on the rest of your post, because you were there, and I very much wasn't.

However, to call it a Medal grab by Canadians would be... False.

It's only lately that that particular action has gotten any press at all.

The Canadian government at the time basicly said "Oh Shi*, Canadian soldiers killed people! Gah, can't have our population knowing that." And shushed it up.
