    Default soviet subs wtf?

Watching the history channel on the russian submarine kursk.. they showed it having a sauna room and a small swimming pool. WTF!!!! Does any other nation's submarine include these luxuries?

Soviet / Russian class 949A "Oscar II" had a small sauna / pool, gymnasium
and solarium, at least according to the following site:

I've seen photos of similar facilities on board the "Typhoon" class as well. I would imagine it is quite helpful for crew morale during long deployments.

Yeah - it's pretty standard practice to have nice perks on subs, since it's otherwise so dreary. I don't know of anything quite analogous on US subs, but I did once read somewhere that US submariners eat extremely well, with steak and lobster and such prepared by top-class chefs.

The Kursk, which is an Oscar II class sub is a nuclear propelled sub. One of the perks of nuclear propulsion is that they tend to be bigger than a conventional diesel electric sub. The Typhoon class soviet/russian sub has an aviary and each crew member has their own room instead of sharing bunks like they used to in the older models.

Going on 60 to 90 Day Deployments will kick your ass. I've heard US Submarine driving crews would pick up lobster on their missions... And on the Ohio Class subs, they wouild pick up fresh fish from the deck, coming from a long deployment to port...

British subs have beer on tap. American subs eat better than some do in 5 star resturants. I doubt it makes up for the conditions on long deployments, though.

Reminds me of the classic Cold War naval standoffs of the past... the American would hold up a pizza because he knew the food the Soviet sailors ate was crap, and the soviet sailors would hold up vodka because he knew the US Navy was a dry navy... ie no alcohol...

Sounds like a decent start of a party if not for the iron curtain.
