There is an excellent book available on this topic, entitled "Ordinary Men" by Christopher Browning, details the actions of Reserve Police Battalion 101 in Poland, and their role in the "Erntefest" actions in fall 1943.
What was most interesting in this book was that on several occasions prior to an action, the Commander offered his men the opportunity not to participate if they so chose, without any disclipinary action being taken. These men had the chance to make a choice, which is much more then can be said for their victims.
