Going out where?
Shooting what?
You need to be slightly more specific? Target? Hunting?
I have just finished my firearm safety course for non-restricted and restricted weapons in Canada, and was wondering what would be a good firearm to buy, with the intention of going out as an occasional shooter.
I don't know what would be better for me to get, a rifle or a pistol. Also I don't know too much about weapon brands (outside of the military) or costs, but I would like something that is reasonably reliable and wont put me in debt for the rest of my life.
My interest is more for the fun of it rather than any practical purpose.

okay, you're not being very specific. Basically, you want something to go out and have some fun with right? Well, I'll assume you don't hunt, so buying a rifle really doesn't make any sense. You say you don't wanna spend to much. If I were you you I'd go with the run of the mill brands, it's hard to argue with S&W, Colt, Berretta. I bought a glock 40mm a while back, fun little thing, not real accurate, but lightweight and cheap. My baby is my .357 S&W, kicks like a mule but it's a blast to shoot. Best advice, find yourself a good gunstore and let the guy know where your at and how much your looking to spend and he'll give you some options. Gun salesman are a hulluva lot more honest than car salesman. Good Luck and happy shooting, just make sure to check your background before you fire.
Do they sell mini-14s in Canada? How about 10/22 Ruger rifles?
Get a Ruger 10/22
- you can trick it out or plink all day.
- cheap to shoot
Semi-rifle, centerfire
- Only if that's what you think you need.
Bolt Rifle
- Why unless you are going hunting.
Pistol
- Whatever fits your hand the best, whatever caliber is not too powerful for you.
Shotgun
-Why, unless you are hunting or shooting skeet.
A good all around collection:
Ruger 10/22
Berretta 9mm
Remington 11-87 12 ga.
AR-15
I live in Toronto, so hunting is a no. Im thinking more along the lines of plinking at the local range. Do you guys find pistols are more fun to shoot then rifles. I have fired rifles and MGs but never got a chance to take a pistol to the range.Originally Posted by California Joe

The short barrel along with the petiteness of the weapon makes it vulnerable to many more factors. All the more to master.
Go with a pistol dude. And mebbe a nice shotgun for those days when you just wanna go raaaaargh.
Git an AR15 of some sort. Armalite of Bushmaster. TOns of stuff out there, kinda cheap round, probably legal near you, and it's an easy rifle to shoot WELL.
