Napoleonic wars...fiuuuuh! In some way, it was a war like the IWW a century before, all europe in flames. It would deserve a whole forum about it, not a few lines. We don´t studied that period in school focusing battle by battle, but in the origins and consequences that french invassion had in Spain, that was catastrophic. As I know, polish troops came with Napoleon himself in the winter of 1808, after the defeat of frenchs in Bailen in July and the evacuation of Madrid by Napoleón´s brother. Polish cavalry fought in a big battle in Somosierra, a mountain near Madrid, and they fought well and Napoleón could enter in Madrid. After that, I think in the battle of Bruch the "french" soldiers and the general were polish, but I´m not sure, this battle was fought in the spanish side by "pageses", catalan farmers, and the hero was a child drummer, they won the battle to polish although it wasn´t of great military importance, but was important because of moral effects in Cataluña. After that, now I´ve searched in google and found very few, only that a famous guerrillero, Juan Martín Díaz el Empecinado(the Stubborn) captured a whole polish battalion, that´s the only mention of polish I could find, although sure they were in many places.Originally Posted by tony6
The war, itself, it didn´t began as an invassion: in fact, frenchs were in Spain a year before the war because a Pact signed between spanish prime Minister, Godoy, and frenchs, for attacking Portugal, an allied of England, but people in general didn´t like frenchs soldiers, as I said in other place, foreigns are welcome in Spain, foreing soldiers not even if they are friends, and it was a lot of anger in the air, and frenchs had revolutionaries ideas, and spanish religious men were ultracatholic, and religious men in Spain in that time knew how to use weapons too. And then Napleon tried to change spanish king by his brother, and spanish people exploded. I can say that spanish king, his wife, and namely his son the future king Fernando VII were a bunch of bastards and cowards, they didn´t deserve being defended, but at the end people fought by independence. People in Spain, today, are very sceptic about big words like patriotism and so, we don´t like this words, although we don´t like other people touch "our" things, if we want insult Spain, we do it because we can, but we don´t tolerate a foreing people doing it, 2 centuries ago and now. When Murat general tried to send spanish kings to France, in 2-Mayo-1808, people began the war, oficially the war began when the major of a little town, Mostoles, declared himself the war to frenchs. The war lasted 4 or 5 years in Spain until spanish entered in France, was very long, and frenchs came into Spain with a lot of volunteers and mercenaries, polish were one of the groups, there were too italians, germans, belgians even turks mamelucos. Frenchs acted like nazis in that time with civil people, and spanish of course acted like them, I can imagine a french prisioner caught by a partisan group had less future that an ice cream seller in the South Pole, and, hey, they did good: KILL THE INVADER!. You can see the pictures of Francisco de Goya about that war, I think they´re better than photos.
I found this, is a reenanctement about the battle of Bruch:

And about Poland and Spain, I found this site of polish embassy in Spain, curiously this site has some subtle criticism about polish policy towards Spain in XVI century:

And well, I don´t know what more to say, it´s a very long subject. I hope other spanish can answer you, but it seems as there are few here.
