    Extra protection of the Neck... pretty obvious.

    GIGN isn't just inside France, I worked with them in different European countries as Germany and Switzerland, maybe they also act oversea when (for example) french ministers are there.

    Not just in France. The Gendarmerie is part of the armed forces, so GIGN members can serve outside French territory. As indeed they did in 1978 (Djibouti) or in 1995 when they were deployed to Algeria during the Air France hijack. The rescue eventually took place in France when the plane was allowed to fly there.

    Besides, Europe is turning into a desert so it's good to be prepared....

    Notice the trees in the background? Leaves turn brown and various shades of brown in the fall, that camo would fit into a fall woodlands color.
    BROWN: IT'S NOT JUST FOR DESERT ANYMORE! :P

    Il me semble bien que quand le GIGN est intervenu a Djib , c'etait encore TOM{territoired'Outre Mer} en 76.

    You're right, it was 1976. Still, the Gendarmerie can operate outside French territory, as they regularly do when Escadrons Mobiles are deployed.

    GIGN was also deployed in the Comores when famous mercenary Bob Denard made another putsch there.
    They also train under all environments, so they must have the proper camo for each situation.
    GIGN is maybe one of the most professional unit and one of the more skilled.
    Do you guys know that the GIGN burns 75 % of all the Gendarmerie Nationale ammo each year ?

    Yes , all of sorts of cool stuff here.

    But anyway , I remember seeing a few pictures of a French counter-terrorist unit (possibly the GIGN , but I can't remember for sure) that was wearing an urban version of the French CCE - camouflage pattern. I've understood that the "urban CCE" - pattern is quite new.

    Why isn't it included here ? Or have I perhaps mixed the units ?

    Yes, but against what specific threat? Is it fire retardant vis-a-via molotovs or something? I think its the first havelock I have ever seen for a helmet.

    The GIPN

    GIGN = Gendarmerie = Army

    GIPN = Police
