All the American tanks (except the M-48A5MOLF) soon will be decomissioned. The plans for the Hellenic Army are to reduce the number of the tanks and to keep no more than 1300 (about 500 Leo1A5, 400 M-48A5 MOLF, 190 Leo2A4 and 170 Leo2AHEL). And then someday we will substitute the M-48s..

Anybody know why they'd retire the M-60's and keep the older M-48?

Because the M-48A5s are modernized with the MOLF FCS, similar to the EMES15 & EMES18 of the Leopard tanks, a very capable system, able of firing on the move etc

Yes,because of the MOLF FCS but also because M48 are ofcourse not as heavy as the M60 thus are better suited for the aegean island units.Untill the ASDEN (islands command) gets modern wheeled IFV in many versions(105mm,40mm etc) we will continue to see tanks on the islands.
