You have never used a Eagle Ind. vest have you? If you had you would realize that their products do not fail (priceless), they come how you want them, color and modular panels (priceless), they are wearable over long periods of time under heavy loads (priceless), and on and on. Eagle also is the industry leader in vest design and product quality. A $30.00 version of a LBV is just that, cheap.
The reason for the pockets laying horizontal is for easier access to mags worn at chest level.

I bought a 40mm grenadier version of the LBV on Ebay for $25 and removed all of the pockets. Then, I bought some 1" Nylon webbing, some Nylon upholstery thead (strong stuff) and six Molle II RACK M4 Double Mag pouches (also off of Ebay). A lot of sowing later, I had three vertical Molle attachment straps on each panel to which I mounted three of the mag pouches (horizontally mounted similar to the SOMAV) to each side. It cost me around $120 total and has taken some serious abuse without any sign of failure. I decided to make it after seeing the SOMAV, but I did not want to pay $400 for it. Of course, my life doesn't depend on my gear and my choice would be different if it did.

Are you the CEO of Eagle Industries?
I dont doubt that Eagle Ind. make outstanding gear. And no, youre right I have not worn an Eagle Ind. vest.
As A Sgt. in the USMC I couldnt afford $400 for a vest for field use, let alone Airsoft(thats the forum were in).

    SCRIM and Co.,

Sorry I came off as such a salesman for Eagle Ind. and your correct, a professional grade vest is probably not a requirement for airsoft engagements. I have been lucky in that every where I've been (for the most part) I have been issued or given Eagle, LBT, Blackhawk, ABA, etc. gear for use/abuse. If I can be of any help in any gear questions just tell me. Keep up the good work SGT.

Whats your favorite piece of kit that youve used? I have an Arktis vest, and I must say its far superior to that MOLLE ****e they started to issue us. And your right, it really is worth the extra $$s.

It really depends on the misssion. I like the MOLLE vest, it's working fine for me. Chest rigs work great for assault in confined areas. My favorites are vests that are built onto your body armor.

Tactical Tailor and Eagle both make a ballistic panal carrier that MOLLE, ALICE and UM-84 pouchs can be mounted. Both are pretty good for limited direct action operations.

Default Or you can get a wasatch

Configured Wasatch with a mix of EGL, Strike, Paraclete and Tactical Tailor pouches.

    YAAFM!

I think its really up to the user's tastes when deciding on a vest. One would be a work of art for one man, yet be not functional/practical to the next.

With that being said, I havent had much experience with the whole "tactical vest" idea. I currently own a Rhodesian vest, its qualified as being a "Load Bearing Vest". I paid the rather cheap price of $80 bucks for it, from the abuse I give it its taken it quite well. Except for one busted plastic clip, but take in mind that I dont rely on this daily/use it daily.

I recently bought a Grad-1 Vest from Russian Combat Gear.
I'll write a review when it arrives...until then I'll leave you folks with a picture.
