Thank you sir. I bought it maybe around 1990 at a garage sale for around $150, so it is worth a tad more now..and something the boys will inherit someday (I have three grandsons).

    on a related note:
I did have a genuine WWII Japanese NCO samurai sword and scabbard, and a pristine Japanese type 38 rifle with mum intact.....along with matching bayonet and a Japanese helmet, and I gave all that already, to my wife's youngest brother (he is an FBI special agent and he has two young sons)...reason I gave it to him, is that wifes dad had a Jap. rifle etc that was stolen, and I wanted the bro-in-law's sons to get the stuff, and know their grand father had been in WWII in the south Pacific at Saipan and Tinian. Family history is so important. I didn't want to wait until I die for them to get it as I didn't want to take a chance someone else might get those items.

Tako, your axe just reminded me something, in the Carpathian mountains the highlanders carry a long handle, small head axes, they called 'ciupaga' in local lingo, ever thought about adding extra length to that axe to make it more of a practical hiking tool???

Yeah, actually thinking of making a haft out of some local tree.

I have two that look very similar to this and rifles to go with them. I will have to dig them out and see how close the details actually are.

Will have to buy a big-knife/machete thing for outdoor/survival/bushcraft/... trips. The Ontario SP8 and CRKT Razel SS7 got my attention, but can't really decide which is "the bestest11one!!lol".
Reviews on the tube show both are very good, well made, high quality, and so on... Have some of you tried or possessed one of these (or both)?

I've got only one machete, it's made in brazil, cost me $8, and been serving me for last 15-16yrs, and I like to abuse my workhorses

Pick well, you may only need one for the rest of your life. They both look heavy, not necessarily a good thing from survival perspective

What about a Condor Varan. Very affordable and gets pretty good reviews. Condor makes the same design in 3 sizes (Rodan 5", Varan 8", Kumunga 10"). In addition, Condor makes various machete designs too.

I have an Ontario 18" machete. I have used it a lot. $20 something back in the day. It has a sawback, which has proven to be useless. It wasn't super expensive, which is good because you can imagine how you'd feel when you jack up your $300 fancy machete by hitting a rock or something while clearing brush.

Many a trail has been created with this machete.

Good for clearing sh*t like this:

    First one here for $23USD

I've tried a few other machetes, but most are modern ones with even worse sawback nonsense, and they're lighter. Lighter isn't really better for most of the foliage I've had to cut, as there is little momentum.

I know you're looking for something that will be more useful in a survival situation. In that case, maybe just a smaller fixed blade or something. I leave a machete home unless I know I have to chop my way through the country.

Best machete I ever used was picked up from a guy in Malaysia who made them from old Land Rover leafsprings. Half the guys from Papakura who were teaching us had blades made by him. Some bastard froim 1 Para nicked it from my kit during Op Palliser in Sierra Leone.
