EBay is a source of the older knives, but they have become quite collectible, and command a pretty good buck these days, especially the Viet Nam era knives.

I dont understand the fascination with the serrated blade on knives of these types. Dont get me wrong, serrations are a good thing on the right blade, its just they are not desirable on some knives.

A perfect example is the Trident. If they offered one without the serrations, I might be interested.

I'm one of those people who believes knives are use specific, not jacks of all trades. Like anything else, you need to pick the right one for the job.
I agree with you in all your points.

here is a photo of a knife I had custom blacksmithed for me, along with two firesteels from a firesteel maker here in the states. Knife is very sturdy and sharp, takes an edge well and the firesteels start a fire within about 2 strikes on flint.

Default Japanese WWII samurai NCO sword & US officer dress sword

and from my militaria collection... a photo of a World War II Japanese military NCO sword, all of the paint was removed from the scabbard (it was finished brown originally as was the handle), and also a U.S. officer dress sword, I do not know the exact date on it but think it is about 1904 give or take....

Default Al Mar Mini SERE 2000 black coated

OK guys, the Mini SERE is here. I shall write down some of my first impressions.

It is very nice. It is in the same class sizewise as a Spyderco Delica.

The Mini SERE boasts steel liners that seem nice and thick. The liners do not have cutouts and they are not skeletonized. This, I am sure, makes the knife stronger.

The blade is sorta "spear-point", with the "spear" part being quite thin. This must be the weakest part of the knife. It is up to the user to not use the tip for prying or other silly things.

The pocket clip is different from any other folder I have seen. It is made for deep carry. The whole knife disappears inside the pocket. Obviously this is more safe, it is harder to drop the knife this way. However it is not possible to draw the knife out fast; at least I could not do it with the particular jeans that I was using. But I did not buy this knife as a self defense tool. If someone is actively searching and looking for an SD blade as a "last line of defense", then maybe this knife is not the right choice. Look at the Mini SERE as a "survival knife" rather than a "tactical" knife.

I'll try to add some pics later... meanwhile, here is a picture from Al Mar:

Yea, the blade is much to thin to be a tactical blade. While not as rugged as any other spydies, it has surprised me with the abuse it has withstood. No blade play or nothing, and its been used weekly for the past 2 years. Its also one of spydies best slicers.

I've had a couple of them. decent knives, especially for the price I paid for them. I think I have an M-16, an M-21, and an "Ichi". the Ichi's power-assist broke (the torsion bar just fell the hell out.). the tactical folders with the Carson Flipper are pretty cool.
