Why do german special forces ALWAYS wear those ridiculous, HUGE helmets (even when they wear civil clothes) ?

These "ridiculous" helmets are called Ulbrichts AM95. They are bulletproof for every 9mm weapons (in german we say SK1 (=Schutzklasse 1)). They may look huge and ridiculous for some of you but I would say that these helmets are better than the SWAT-Helmets, which are used very often! I like the helmets an a lot because I think they look awsome! Bulgarian and Danmark Special-Forces use them too!

And specialy for you Johnny I've got some more pics

When do people understand that it doesn't matter what the gear looks like, but how it operates and how it fits you.

The helmet features active hearing protection, skull mircophone and complete SK1 protection (visor too).

They are bad-ass, like SEK (even if most of those guys are arrogant)

    Boy, danke.

But i called 'em ridiculous" for a reason. The most Units qhich operate in very close cobmat (like BUS, Airplane, House etc.) wear either no, small or only Pro-Tech's (only for safety if they fall or hit somethin with their head), so i dont think theese Huge things are practical. Yes, they are save and I (i think i was about 9-11 lol ) once thougt about why the face is never protected and that helmets should have Bullet Proof Glass in the Front, but i think that they handycap your mobility in close areas. I mean, you are the SPECIAL Force, you should be able to fire faster and better than one Terrorist or drunk moron. I would feel uncomfortable with it... i also saw German Special forces storming houses with theese Huuuge Demining Vests...

Well I can say that these helmets are big and heavy, but as I was at a SEK-show in Muenster, one of the Officer gave me one of these helmets and it wasn't to big! I could move my head freely and walking through a door was no problem. I think when these helmets would be to big or to heavy the SEK would have ordered new ones

Johnnyboy, you used that helmet someday or is this just an assumption?

This is not a special force like in the military. The ROE is quite different. One officer down is a mission failure, one operator down just bad statistics. That's why they protect themselves. They do wear chainmail for some purpose, too, no military elite unit would ever think about that 5 kg medieval piece of gear.

Why do police units use ballistic shield but not Delta with their ProTec helmets?

Because they are under a different ROE and don't arrest many guys which is the main concern of police units.

They can move swiftly through confined spaces like busses or planes. Even the 1,90 m guys, which are common in SEK Kiel. The helmet is awesome and gives another advantage to the officer.
