You mean this picture? In IDF we actually wear berets on very rare occasions(ceremonies and such) and most of the time we bear it folded on the left shoulder. So when you eventually put it on the head it has this distinctive "folded" structure.

quite a rare photo! he is using PRC-91 radio, a rather old bulky system used during the 90s. the 91 replaced the old PRC77 (still used by reserve and non-combat units), and were mostly phased out in favour of the lighter PRC-624. to achieve the range of PRC-91, 624s are used together with an amplifier module.

I had mine folded for four years on my shoulder, it never stopped me from wearing it correctly and I never looked like a chikmuk (been told I looked like a serbian paratrooper).

was the 91 replaced by the PRC-624 for its weight, or was it it because of its high price tag?

Really? cause I remember all what we had was PRC77(late 90's), although infantry guys had some PRC-91(whose adopted version we had in tanks), which was considered at the time very "fancy". 624 was a wet dream of every ground soldier(probably fifth of the 91's weight), but I'm not sure it had the range (other characteristics) comparable to 91...
