An Israeli soldier stands on top of an army tank which mechanically broke down on its way back from operating in the Gaza Strip, close to the Israel Gaza border near Kissufim, Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008. Israel and Gaza's Hamas rulers sought to contain the fallout from the worst fighting between the two sides since a truce went into effect months ago, that killed six Hamas gunmen and prompted "militants" to pound neighboring Jewish communities with mortars and rockets.

When we were leaving the strip, the guys from 7'th armor division came in with their tanks, we were talking about stuff tankers normally talk about, chicks, football and of course, maintenance and performance each other's tanks, they were telling us some horrible stories...

Are there tanks considered to be cursed? I know this applies to most technology, when you have a few of it and one of them makes the trouble always, you start to really get supersticious.

You should listen to us, the Magach guys. Now, these are the real horrors.

    Oh, trust me i did.
Couple of weeks ago i was talking to a lieutenant at a check post, he was from Nov' 01 i believe, he started his service in the armor core in 401'st when they were still using Magach 6 Gal Batash tanks, all of us who were listening to his stories about his service on that tank were completely shocked, the maintenance work that they done on those tanks never ended, things were always breaking down, it it's torsion bars or tracks that were always tearing apart.
When we toled him about the life in a Merkava 4, he said that he should have been recruited with us.

In comparison to a Magach, Merkava 4 is a ground tearing space fighter.

I witnessed at least once when a torsion bar broke when the tank was just standing on a "parking lot" (mishtah). Depending on where it gets broken, replacement can take from 2 hours to 2 days. In fact, during the war week at the end of commanders' course, we spent 2 days exactly on this - we got the first(nastiest possible) torsion bar broken.

Yes, it is. In fact, after visiting a Mk4 when I was in "Mekzo'ot" (basic tankers' professional training) we started calling them space ships ("halaliot").

Let me guess, the one that needs the engine to be removed in order to replace it?

Looks like it should read Nahal mistalbet above Shechem. I never got to look at Nablus from further away then the police station and the shuk. Can't decide what was worse, the winter or the summer. It had two redeeming qualities in our eyes - the Magav made grat coffee, and it wasn't Lebanon.

No, not that dramatic. Simply an extremely bad human engineering and necessity for extra-support the front part of the hull, which complicates things beyond any reason.

I guess one doesn't really have a 30 or 40 ton jack that you take out of the tank's boot, huh?

Actually we do - "Arabic jack" (don't ask me where this name coming from). It's not mechanical as the car jack though. I wish I could I explain how it works but I'd need to draw or something. The problem though you can't use it on the first torsion bar (because the elevated bogey has to be supported from both sides).
