Poor guys, they'll have lost like 75% of their hearing by the time their service is up...

I think that's an incorrect stigma or an exaggeration at the very least, unless they don't take the appropriate precautions of course.

I love these guys. I just remember hearing their shells whistling over my head during Cast Lead and thinking to myself, god bless totchanim. Same with cheil haavir :P . Those apache pilots are amazing.

I'm sure your right GiladS, I just remember my ears ringing for a month during Grapes of Wrath, and I wasn't nearly as close to those guns as the totchanistim were.

Same thing for me during Op Cast Lead, but then again ear plugs can do wonders.

If I was in totcahnim I would have surely gotten a pair of silicone ear plugs and would have treated them the same way I treated my rifle.

For sure... Although isn't it a lot quieter inside the m109 when firing as opposed to outside? I'm pretty sure it works that way in tanks at least.

True that, I fell in love with the Apache pilots during Operation Hot Winter.

Same goes for the Armored Corps, after hearing the Merkavas roll into Jabalia (we already took positions in the houses) we felt as if our 'ars' friends from the neighbourhood had come to watch our backs...

In tank (or even when you out, as a tank commander), when a round is fired and you wear the helmet, the sound is as strong as when you fire your M4 with earplugs, if not weaker. As in the case with the small arms, most of the sound comes form the supersonic blast when round leaves the barrel. So unless you stand near the cannon itself without any ear protection, you shouldn't get any hearing problems. In fact, I'm pretty sure that if I got any hearing damage it's only from being near small arms fire range.

I guess it's more of an issue for those standing outside of the vehicles. I know the tanks even at around 100 meters away would leave my ears ringing.

Look in Norwegian military pictures page 44 ,Commander of the Norwegian Army, general Per Sverre Opedal visiting the norwegian soldiers in Faryab, though he looks like he would prefer a M1 Garand.
Danish chief of staff, The Armoured Personel carrier of the type Piranha, carrying the head of the Danish Military. Was hit by an improvised explosive device (IED) During a visit of the danish military presence in Afghanistan. Commanders going to the front is not that uncommen.

I can say you when standing in the turret with my upper body out and firing the main gun, the sound is not strong at all (wearing helmet, of course). I think it spreads mostly to the sides and forward. I do remember being deafened by a tank firing next to us.

From my experience, the impact of a tank standing next to your own tank and firing a main gun round, is a lot stronger than the one you have when you fire the main gun in your tank.

Also, i don't know why, but firing the 60mm mortar was always harder on my ears than firing the main gun. every time i fired it, it felt like having tightly placed corks plucked from my ears.

True, I know a guy who got his hearing completely screwed after firing an RPG without any ear protection.

the M72 LAW is also pretty damned bad if you're standing back and to the side.
