    I'm surprised it was open.

My mistake, this is the vehicle I recognized. Captured from Lebanon in 06.

Let me know if that worked?

Is there an Israeli affairs discussion thread somewhere on here? I've yet to find one with the search function.

Tourists always fall for that stuff. If you want to see rusted, lame, not taken care of "exhibition", go to the IAF Museum.

Compared to a 'gius' - an induction, probably several dozen, maybe a 100 throughout the military, mostly in the infantry.

    Where do they come from?
    1. Young Americans who make Aliyah, they move to Israel in a series of deliberate steps. At some point after becoming citizens, getting a feel for the language, they get inducted. Depending on age, they serve various periods of time.

    2. Same as 1, but with fewer deliberate steps and they tend to go into the army soon after arriving in Israel.

    3. Mahal - This is a program that allows non Israeli Jews (ages 18-23) to serve in the army for 18-24 months. Usually (but not always) in infantry units because of the limited period of their service. They are not Israeli citizens at the time of their service.

    4. Mahal has a related program for the children of Israelis who live abroad, parents who've left the country. Their children are considered to be Israeli, but are obviously not subject to the draft. Once they're inducted, they have to make a decision - finish the army and return 'home', or declare themselves as a 'returning resident' and then they're obligated (on paper anyway) to complete 3 years service and are subject to normal reserve duty.

Yeah, in comparison to the US Jewish population, just a small fraction joins the IDF. 100 at any given time seems like a pretty reasonable estimate. During basic, 7 of us were from the US; and three of the samals (nco's) were too; two of them, oddly enough, were from St. Louis, MO.

By no means is this limited to people from the US; during my time it was like a veritable UN, with guys from all over Europe, South America, Canada, South Africa, and Australia.

Back in the '80, there, of course, was no Mahal or Garin Tzabar, but the IDF rules about service for foreigners were much more lax. Not everyone was Jewish.

There is an on-line association for US and foriegn born IDF veterans:

    http://www.alufstone.com/

The name is based on one of a number of US WWII veterans who helped form the modern IDF:

Oddly enough I never met one during my service, except one American guy who was an Oleh (and well olim from other countries). My friend though who served in 80's in Golani had a non-Jewish British guy and there was not so long ago an article about that Swedish Christian guy serving in Golani, quite remarkable.

Laugh all you want but I found your secret UAV program unguarded and snapped this for an MP.Net exclusive shot.

I was going to say almost exclusively the infantry, but I didn't feel comfortable saying it without a hard number. I knew a handful of us who got into the Air Force. When the Nahal had an armored component, there were some there too, but that's back in the late 70s. I think it's pretty much the infantry (paratroops included.)

Yeah, I know what you mean. I think it's changing now, armor gaining some "prestige", but at my time being a tanker was considered basically semi-jobnik. How unfair if you think about it, after all we scored most kills in Leb, for instance.

Sheesh, I think you guys scored the most kills in just about every war.

I know of some olim who served in units other than infantry, such as artillery, air-force and dover tzahal, but they all had/have some sort of special skills or talents.

Do you have any recollection of a Baptist African-American guy from Kansas City serving in Nahal during '85 - '86?
