Any of you guys ever visit www.israelmilitary.net ? I think it sucks. The moderators are super uptight. There are mainly threads from people asking questions about serving in the IDF and then the moderator who probably lives at home with his mother shuts everyone down and tries to tell them that they will never be able to do whatever it is they want to do over there.
Yeah, I believe a number of guys here are (inactive) members. I myself have not posted there in a long time.
The IsraelMilitary moderators mean well. The site owner is a undoubtedly a committed friend of Israel.
The specific person you reference (I will not name names) is trying to set proper expectations, and is likely correct about the vast majority of people he counsels. Sure there are exceptions, but many foreigners who want to serve in the IDF lack a certain perspective and have unrealistic expectations. It is the whole "I do not want to die of boredom but die in combat" egoism thing. And, he is dispelling that gung-ho attitude. Better to be mentally prepared for what is likely than expect to be the next Yoni Netanyahu.
And with that, more than enough has been said on the topic.
Some I don't think were posted. Let me know if they were.

First of all I think that these well-intentioned young people can be be politely encouraged without misleading them. There are tons of things that new immigrants can do in the IDF. While they may not be able to do the truly top secret things they dream of, I have personally have seen numerous olim in very serious combat units (Egoz, Duvdevan, etc.). As a newcomer to any place, the last thing anyone needs is some know it all, been there done that type putting them down.
Secondly, the guy banned me from the site and said I was an imposter plus a young kid who had never been in the IDF. Neither of these are true.
Yes; I know. I too have plenty of anecdotal examples of Olim (even some with sketchy ties to Judaism and Israel) doing all sorts of things in the IDF. But, in each one of my stories there is always certain something that makes the case unusual and not the norm for the vast majority.
And, I also know that the person in reference is, shall we say, less than diplomatic in his dealings with prospects, especially if they do not fit into a very narrow demographic. But, I do not doubt his good intentions.
Lastly, I think we are toeing forum rules and are most likely OT.
We can talk about this in PM some more if you like.
