As far as i can recall, the soldier in the wheelchair was a tank gunner and lost his legs to an ATGM that penetrated the turret. there was a news piece once about him, his recovery and the fact that he still plays his guitar. at least i think it's him.
    Just found this:

    Default It's about the wound

The CTAR has the same barrel length as the M4 and that's the standard asides from the Tavor, you don't need anything longer. Unlike the US military, we - normal riflemen - don't engage targets at silly distances like 300 - 500m. That's why you have designated marksmen (who also use M4s or Tavors) and snipers. The Maximum distance a rifleman will train to fire at is MAYBE 200m and that's pushing it. I know I personally fired at a 300m target a few times for kicks, but normally only a designated marksman with an ACOG would take a shot like that.
In short, the Tavor is more than long enough. I personally don't understand the US army's fixation with full length rifles. Maybe they're more accurate at greater distances, but those are distances that a normal rifleman doesn't need to engage. And in CQB they are useless. Even the M4 is a bit too long for CQB, but you can get by.
The one big thing I think that needs to be changed in the Tavor and micro tavor is to add more rails. On the tavor you have one rail for a flashlight, but no lower rail for a vertical grip (though you can mod it to attach one). On the Micro tavor you DO have a lower rail or the option to attach one for a vertical grip, and an upper rail for who knows what, but no side rail for a flashlight. I suppose you could attach the flashlight to the lower rail, but that would be pretty ****ty and would not allow for a vertical grip.
Sorry if I'm late to this discussion, and I hope this hasn't been covered yet. But I've wondered why the CTAR has been seen in such wide distribution.

I realize that barrel length does not mean accuracy, but rather velocity. The problem here that I see is not one of putting rounds on target at 300+ meters, the CTAR can surely do that. But the fact that military issue 5.56mm ball ammo will not fragment past, what 75-80 yards using modern loads? Why not issue the standard length Tavor instead of the CTAR? The wounding properties of 5.56mm are quite effective with an impact velocity of around 2700fps or higher.

We've all heard the reports of people getting hit by an M4 and fighting on longer than they should. Hostiles shot by 20 inch M16s don't last quite as long.

In open terrain (I believe your argument is relevant here) a regular infantryman will rarely engage a target beyond 100m, if at all.

He will either engage a target or several targets as part of larger force with the aid of LMGs (on the sqaud level) and other suppresive fire elements on the higher levels (mortars, grenade launchers and so on).

This while striving to decrease range and engage the enemy as close as possible.

I do agree that designated marksman meant to engage targets at up to 500m should be issued the longer barreled standard version of the Tavor.

Does the IDF still fly the A-4 Skyhawk? I would have thought they would have been phased out by now, given their age. What role are they used for now?

    Thanks in advance

If they are used at all, that's only for training.

Just noticed that the Orev Golani (Golani's anti-tank company) pin is also featured in the first pic...

It's pretty cool because even though I know Golani now has the Tavor, I still wanted to see it to believe it. Not many pictures of them with it (as of now).

On the Israeli Channel 2 news tonight there was a report stating that the IDF will begin integrating Elbit's Skylark UAV system, so that it would be used on the battalion level.

I'm guessing the photo was taken in BAHALATZ due to the instructor (green lace) with the light grey beret.
