They dont serve as tank crews but are instructors?

Their training includes pretty extensive field training too, and they are certified as crew members. But as instructors they do only the "theoretical" part of the training. The "practical" part is done by the tank commanders(I did it part of my service).

The PALSAR do it for the wasach and to try to say that they're better than the Orev and CHAN. Word has it that in a little while they'll be changing the maslul so that everyone is trained in each other's specialties and everyone will do LOTAR.

I don't see why not: you steel using different objects (corners, walls etc) as cover, when only your head's visible - perfectly round helmet would make it much easier for the enemy to spot you from distances. But of course it has lower effect then in the usual "field" setting.

    [Edit]
I think there is maybe some friend/foe element in this...

X2 about the friend/foe thing. I saw an Israeli documentary about a unit in the 2006 war (Channel 2 I think). Hezzies put mitsnefets to look like IDF. Out guys then removed their own, and were able to identify each other again. If Hezzies don't put mitsnefet, our guys can, and so on. Shows how much a modern war/CT ops is much more than shooting a gun.

I wonder whether the Givati cadets excelled as they did in the last course...

I also heard the Israeli Navy was looking into buying the AEGIS ships after the Lebanon war last year.
