Odd, it almost looks like the flying skull of the Air Force's 101 Sqdn. But I can't make it out if it's anything else.

Former IDF Chief of Staff Amnon Lipkin-Shahak died Wednesday after a long battle with cancer. He was 68-years-old.

He passed away in Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem, at noon.

Lipkin-Shahak was the IDF's 15th chief of staff. He later served as the tourism and transportation minister in the 15th Knesset.

    Default Erez Gerstein

    Hi All,
I had the privilege of serving as a soldier under the command of Erez from the day I joined Palsar 95. He was then a young sublieutenant (and I was a rookie).
Before I go into telling stories about him I'd like to ask all of you to refrain from posting anything disrespectful and that includes fantasy stories and referring to him as "BAD ASS"
I know that the writer was trying to describe him as a mean soldier and fighter, but please do not use cheap holywood slang terms when referring to him. Some of us still grieve the loss of his life and I feel that addressing him as such is disrespectful.

I spent enough time with Erez to be able to tell that the story of him "popping" a grenade is a baseless story. what he did do was EXPLAIN that when you are about to toss a greande into a room (in urban warfare) you could let the lever go (popping it) and wait one or two seconds before tossing the grenade in. this effectively shortened the time that was left for anyone in the room to take cover. He did demonstrate it with a practice grenade (makes a noise only, not lethal).

Erez was a giant that we followed everywhere inspired by the confidence he instilled and the professionalism that he demonstrated and passed on to us.

From all the things I remember about him, one of the fondest memories is of the fight he put up on the day when he received his Luitenant bars. the tradition is that you get showered one way or another. We were then camped in Lebanon and it took most of us in the team to hold him long enough so that two could drench him with water from 48 liter cooking pots....

The photo attached was taken sometime in 1982, not far from Beirut. it was during a training Excercise. I am in the foreground kneeling. Erez is seen in the background standing as safety-officer.

The answer is not straight forward yes or no.
There are units that comprise mainly some groups like Bedouins and Druze, and at the same time you'll find them serving in any other unit as long as they ask for it and are apt for it.

That includes advancing to very high ranks.

In general Bedouins are excellent trackers and their skills are put to good use.

They don't just parachute: the Paratroopers Brigade's Reconnaissance Battalion practice urban warfare in a live-fire drill, meant to stimulate the reality of fighting in densely populated areas. During the exercise, the combat engineering company practiced taking over a building, all the while taking care to minimize uninvolved casualties.

    Great article about Amnon Lipkin-Shahak

Under fire in the Lebanese capital in 1973, with one man dead and another dying, the IDF chief who passed away on Wednesday nonetheless completed his mission — and won the second of ‘the medals they give you when something’s gone wrong’
The unflappable commander: Amnon Lipkin-Shahak’s battle in Beirut

    RIP

    Welcome!

Very nice that you have a personal connection to someone of such stature.

I still remember the stories about hand-grenades and room-clearing tactics from my tironut in 1986.

Documentary "the gatekeepers", which interviews every live Shin Bet director, is getting rave reviews:

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2309788/#lb-vi3741296409

    trailer in the link.

You really see the evolution and softening of the Israeli government in it though. Avraham Shalon (1980-1986) saying "In a war against terrorists, forget about morality" to Dishkin (2005-2011) saying "One mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter".

Great pix tanks_alot, I noticed that some of the paras have Trijicon (?) reflex sights and some have some kind of magnifying scopes on their M-4s. Are they allowed to chose their sights on an individual basis or do they just have to take what's assigned?

Their boots look more comfy than the old black leather ones as well.

No, they don't get to choose, the guys with the magnifying scopes are designated marksmen.

As for the boots, some units allow soldiers to use mountain boots (don't know if they provide them or not). other posters will probably know better than me.
