Also looks like some kind of optic on the MAG as well. That's the first time I've seen one in Israel. I know that optics are quite common on machine guns in US service.
Ah, as old tech as it may have been, the old starlight scope qualifies as an optic ..

As you can guess I served in Palsar 95, later as Platoon cmdr in Batallion 13 and thereafter in a small unit that operated in Lebanon. (אשחר)
Yeah, us old farts are not shy

Nahal and Givati are already well represented, so it is good to have another Golani perspective on the board. Not familiar with the last unit referenced.

    Were you an oleh?

Hi, I did Aliah, but in 1973.
Esch-char (אשחר) was a Mistaarvim unit. it was formed as an idea of Gen Ori Or and served in Lebanon. after the IDF moved to the buffer-zone it was divided and was used as the nucleus for other such units. (ther very first Mistaarvim unit was formed an operated in 1948)

I was under the impression that Mistaravim had a long history, even before the creation of the state. And that the modern mistaravim units were formed after 67 to deal with problems in the Territories. Wasn't Samson the first one?

No,the first mistaarvim unit was before the creation of Israel. It was a branch in the Hagana, worked under the Palamach."The syrian divison" it was disbanded in 1943.After that, there was "The arab divison"in the palmach.
Then when Israel was created the arab divison became "Intellgence service unit 18".so that was the first mistaarvim unit ..

But the unit mentiond above didn't have the same missions as today's mistarvim and eschar,so i think thats what he meant

Thanks for the explanation. If my memory serves, Or visited us on occasion while we served in the North. My unit did some operations with Shabak in S. Lebanon in the buffer zone, but not with a mistaarvim-type unit. However, later during Intifada I, we did operations with Mistaarvim units.

Indeed there was a Misttarvim unit back in 1948, but as others said it had other missions, and between then and 1983 there was a considerable gap.
Blue &White, but the time you joined the army my unit was already used as nucleus for other unit. (and I was a civilian)

to keep the record correct and not offend anyone I have now edited my post

No to start trolling or anything, but how does the "regular" IDF sees these religious guys?

    Personally I can't stand them!!!

Reportedly, the IDF plans to enlist the Haredim in 3-4 more battalions, based on the model of Netzah Yehuda, but that will be called 'Netzah Israel' and will be affected to the Southern border.

Mostly motivated soldiers that didn't have to serve in the IDF, but chose to anyways, often alienating themselves from their families.

They meet the same standards as every other infantry unit, and in war-time, they will be deployed with kfir. The only issue is that they have the same "peace-time" deployment because they don't allow females on their bases, so they can't switch to other areas in Israel.

Personally, I know a few people in the pictures I posted, and in all of their cases, it would have been Netzach or no service (all for different reasons). I'm happy they chose to serve, and I hope that their service encourages more hareidi youth to consider military service.
