KLu cliffhanger - Irak, Al Muthanna, 19 januari 2004

Irak, As Samawah, 20 januari 2004

Irak, As Samawah, 20 januari 2004

Iraq, As Samawah, 20th of january 2004
Right after the arrival of the Japanse Advance party a combined visit was paid to the local authorities. The Japanese commander Colonel Sato and the Dutch detachmentcommander Lieutenant-Colonel of the Marines Richard Oppelaar discussed the general and political situation with the Governing council Jim SOriano (CPA spokesman) and governor Al Hassani. Today there'll be some more deep talks about which reconstruction projects are going to be realised in the future.

While the Dutch detachement (SFIR2) is exactely halfway her deployment in this week, again a class of the Iraqi police was sworn in simultaneous with the opening of their first barracks in the province. In some other place the first HQ of the Iraqi traffic police in the province went operational as well. Also 5 extra police cars equiped with the newly started communications system, which enables communications between the fire department and the police, were handed over. Another step forward in the reconstruction process of the province. In the end this should lead to an independent functioning of the local police by april. At the moment the local police is still being trained, guided and assisted by the Dutch.

Lately 800 believers have started their crusade from As Samawah to Mekkah. Everything was busy as hell, but in a good mood. It's been the first time in decades that this could happen in freedom. In the past the Ba'ath party controlled who could and couldn't participate in such events.

I wonder how "popular" a SAW like that is with the soldiers? I know that I
would have liked to have something like the Ultimax 100 rather, same weight,
same dimensions and a helluva lot more firepower and sustained fire capabilities.

Don't know how much they like the Diemaco LSW, but the marines are the only ones using them in the Netherlands... Other units have the Minimi (M249 for you yanks )

Standoff Land Attack Missile-Expanded Response (SLAM-ER) to an S-3B Viking
Didnt know S-3's could carry them now. I knew they could carry AGM-84E's (SLAMS) cause they can carry harpoons, which are the same size and shape as SLAMS, but SLAMERS are a bit different.
