Springfield Armory makes great products. I'm considering getting one of these too. The only question I have is, what good is a .308 with a 16" barrel? I bet it has a lot of muzzle flash. You will lose a fair amount of velocity, since the cartridge is designed for a 22" barrel. I might get it anyway.

    Default Socom 16

The only negative that I've heard about this rifle was that by chopping down the barrell the gas ejection system was a bit fouled. I think there may have been another thread on this same topic. Try searching.

Guns & Weapons for Law Enforcement and Military magazine did a big write up about it in the September or October issue. It's a good all around rifle!

Good luck and send pics of range time!

I heard that too, but Springfield fixed the problem by somehow re-tuning the gas system??

Yeah, a little much with the rail system, but it looks cool.

They also have the SOCOM 16

    And the M1A Scout

Ah, I like the Socom 16 and their M1A Scout version - comfortable, good balance and clean rifle... Haven't gotten to fire one yet, but it's certainly one rifle that I would like to own and will own.

The "Terminator" guns pictures above are nice for some, just not for me... I wonder how much more weight all that metal adds to the weapon design - must to wreck havok on the balancing? Estetically, it also loses its appeal to me. This is my want and need:

Would need "not so evil" Cali legal muzzle thingie that makes me want to assault stuff a lot less :/

My CC that doubles as my allowance on firearm purchase just raised my Limit to where a Cali legal M1A Scout is just a snap of the plastic away... It takes incredible will power not to run out and get one right now

I've got nothing negative to say about em'. Good rifles. Never shot the SOCOM 2, but am very familiar with the SOCOM, and have never heard of any problems with it whilst running anything other than really ****ty surplus from asscrakistan or something.

Might be a good gun to digest those Argentinean 144gr's.

Yes they did. The author said that with the Springfield muzzle brake the recoil and muzzle flash were very tame, alowing quick follow-up shots. Also said it was very accurate for a 16" barrel

I'm interested, what is the rationale behind buying a short barreled M14, like the SOCOM II? If its a powerful short range defensive weapon you are interested in, aren't you worried about over penetration or keeping the rifle on target after the recoil hits you? Why not stick with a Mini 14 or a shotgun?

I suppose that I could see using a short barreled M14 as a more portable rifle for casual shooting. If you are considering buying it based on looks, the original M14 would be in better taste, but that is only a matter of personal opinion.

Just a personal opinion (shared by millions), but as a weapon or self defense implement, the Mini-14 sucks. It's fine for plinking, but WTF shoots back at you when you plink?

Plus, if you are in an "emergency situation" or "social encounter", shall we say, and you're in a building, in an urban area (such as where I live - Los Angeles), you may be inside a building, shooting to 10 meters one second, then find yourself on a street where targets can fire at you from up to or beyond 300 meters. Cannot really do much with a shotgun at that range.

It's basically a comprimise. Otherwise you'd carry around 14 different weapons trying to do everything "right".

Then again that kinda stuff will never happen. Right? Right?

I'm not going to argue with you whether the Mini 14 sucks or not, becuase it does suck. It’s a reliable rifle but not very accurate. I wouldnt own one for defense because it would easily penetrate through at least 2 or 3 walls in a house, whereas a shot gun would not and be as likely to kill anyone else around. However, it is still better than any 30.06 with regard to overpenetration.

You do bring up a good point about using the SOCOM II interchangeably as a short range and a medium/long range rifle in combat. Wouldn’t you agree that a .223 or 6.8 AR15-type rifle would do a better job though?
