Its not an L96A1, the SR98 is an AI AW-F, and the most notable modification was the addition of the MIL-STD-1913 scope rail. The L96A1 is a straight AI AW.

Sorry I wasn't being as clear as I could...

L96A1 is simply the British designation for the AW and the AW-F simply refers to it having the folding stock.

So really, you can throw either term around in a general sense in my books.

A few countries use the AW but all have their own rail (and other) modifications to their specifications.

    just a bit of info.

the letter in the model refers to the country of origin or where they are made:

    M - America (m16, m4, m198)
    L - Britian (l96, l119)
    F - Austraila (f88, f89, AW-F)

So the SR98 and the L96A1 are not the same weapon, that's all I'm saying. The AW is not the same as the AW-F, the folding stock is a pretty big difference in my book, especially for this style of weapon, and if AI sees fit to define them seperately, then I shall do the same. That was all I was saying.

That's certainly not a hard and fast rule you've got there...

The F in AW-F refers to "Artice Warfare - Folding". (As in folding stock, not that it was made in Australia.....because they're not.).

Forcing me to dig up some old stuff...

During the trial back in 97 the contenders were:

Accuracy International AW (Note, as i said, the accepted model had mofifications, notabley the F variant to be specific)

    Keppler KSIII

    Armament Technology M24

    Knight Armaments SR-25

Just for good measure, the .50cal contenders were:

    Accuracy International AW50F (selected)

    Barrett 82A1

    Robar RC50F

Off the top of my head there was initially a 4th in the running before procurement for testing begane, but it failed to meet some project requirements so it wasn't considered for testing.

Some pics of norwegian police snipers w VS94P (VaapenSmia m94 Politi). Basicly an upgraded Mauser 98K action with Heym barrel, Zeiss 3-12X56, and adjustable laminated stock. Almost the same as Norwegian Armys NM-149...
