Heck, I didn't know there even was a safe zone in Afghanistan....
I didn't find one when I was there, but I still did sit on the roof of my 4x4 for long periods of time...
    ...on guard...

Take a look at the pics...what kinda terrain surrounds the shots? Mountains, Hills, High ground. On top of the Hummvee or beside it doesn't make a difference, the only resonably safe area is under armour. You don't know the situation the photos were taken in or how many other friendlies are in proximity to the shot or what security steps are taken. Incidentally we always put someone up high to watch for "bukshi" kids trying to sneek onto the range in the dead ground to get brass.

Well I liked the first part, too bad there were no infos about Grenada, how the SEAL Teams changed through the 80's, thats why the book is a big let down for me.
The modern stuff....mehh, I've read about it.

I would assume the guy doing the sitting is well aware of the area and whether it is safe or not. Especially since he is either a sniper or works with them. If he guesses wrong, he is dead so I assume he gave it some thought before sitting up there.

What was the genesis of the ghille suit anyway ? I've read that it was created by Scotish gamekeepers, but how did they get the idea etc. ?
