Default Full Spectrum Close-in Layered Shield(FCLAS)

This may have already been posted but I couldn't find anything under the search button on this so I figured I'd just make this thread.

If you haven't heard of FLCAS or what it is then I will tell you. It is a system that destroys incoming missiles or RPGs by detecting them, launching an explosive counter measure and then detroying the incoming RPG. Of course it is still experimental at this point.

here's some more detailed information about the system.

This link to follow is a video of future combat systems. If you click the halfway mark on the video you can see what the FLCAS is supposed to look like in combat. Its a cool video.

What do you all think of this system? If it works then it could change the face of armoured warfare I think. More medium weight forces with the proctection of heavy weights.

Russian Droz and Arena works on the same principles I think. Dont know how effective they are in actual combat.

Of course, it means you can't have accompanying infantry or use it in close spaces, making it fairly worthless in urban ops.

Similar to reactive armor, which has been around for decades; it just works farther out (and is much more complicated- read more breakable). I'm sure it is a neat system, but it's usefulness these days? Questionable.

How do you figure it would be useless in urban operations, with all the RPG fire that is being seen in Iraq I'm sure if the system works that it would be useful.

If the Army fielded this system, it would significantly impact battlefield capabilities, especially in urban environments, by saving lives and equipment. Further, it has proven successful versus various types of threats in recent field testing. There's a real need to address the close-in threat.

Collateral damage is supposed to be far less than an RPG round detonating.

That's good to hear, not killing civilians is almost as important as killing the enemy these days.
