I just found out there's a shooting range some 200 metres from where I live.

If you become a member of that range/club, chances are that you could buy a second hand gun trough them cheaper.
For a new gun I would recommend Slendebroek.

    Yes.
I believe it takes a year until I'm allowed to purchase my own gun if I understand the regulations correctly.
    Just some food for thought

Yes, and you can own 5 weapons on a permit. It'll have to be renewed every year if i'm up to speed on the Arms and Ammuntions Law. Your legal status needs to be the same as when the Justice/interior ministry signed a declaration of no objection, or the permit will get revoked, not issued again.
There are different permits for different uses, but i assume we're talking about a sporting permit here?

EDIT: Three years later, and Crysis is still giving my PC the heebie-jeebies. Donwloading the real lifesis mod(guess why it's named that) might have had something to do with that, however...

    Yeah sporting permit I believe.
Everything is in French so that's why I haven't bothered, but then today I just found out that the range is so close so that I might as well ... but now I feel like just the thoughts of bureaucracy is already exhausting. Arg! Wish I could just shoot!

Visit and/or join the shooting club, they will be able to tell you everything you need/want to know.
If you just want to shoot, the club probably owns weapons just for that. Find out what you want first before you buy.

Trouble is, they most likely just speak French and holding a conversation about technical regulations in French ... eerrrr.

Isn't Belgium a multi lingual country? They probably have a member that speaks Dutch or at the very least a brochure.
