    I'll invest in your restaurant.

McArctic does have a nice ring to it

Start small, real small. How much is rent for some sort of small shop downtown where you are? How much would it cost to get used cooking equipment (don't need all the big fancy stuff, just some large griddles and frying pans and such) and how much is it for a business license? Starting a business in Calgary can be real expensive, but small private restaurants for going in and going out with food (small wall tables and stools) cost some of these Lebanese guys next to nothing. And they make good money off of it.

Really, if you don't do it, eventually someone else will, and you'll regret it as he will be rolling in the dough. If there are no western style diners/restaurants where you are, then that is a huge opportunity in the market. That is why you hear all the time of US/Can based restaraunts moving off to Russia to cash in on the growth (Chilies is the recent one).

Russia is not a very friendly environment for small businesses (especially successful ones).

I currently work through the internet (translations, articles, and maybe soon video games), so I am completely unaffected.

not very friendly for small businesses? How so? Ask Asch or AlexMartin, cause Asch owns a small business and Alex invests in a small one. And I constantly see articles once in a while that talk about various small businesses in Russia.

The high taxes, not to mention "protection money" that you have to pay. I'm sure Asch and AlexMartin had to go through a lot to be where they're at. Things are just not as easy as they seem.

What is this protection money? I heard of it during the 90's but they still do that? Cause I thought they wanted you to make note of such activities and take it local authorities?

High taxes? Well, what is high taxes to you? You don't need to support Natives and pay federal and provincial taxes, now do you?

"Protection money" is exactly what you think it is: money that owners of small businesses have to pay so that they don't get "wacked".

Regarding taxes, they tax you for everything. There's so many different things they look for to get money off of you for, its ridiculous.

Anyhow, I just don't have the kind of money to start on this kind of project. I actually considered it when I first moved here, but realized right away that I would not be able to afford it.

Oh, and yes, a lot of "90's practices" are continued to this day, although you don't really hear about them on the news.

Well if it is the case, then I would start suing or doing something, rather than sitting around and complain. If everyone stays silent, then nothing will get done (think that the US fight against mob in the 30's and 40's where done though people doing nothing?). And as for taxes, what is the rate?

The "system" doesn't work in the same way in Russia as it does in the West. And the people won't do anything about it, either.

Meanwhile, my situation is ok at the moment, since I have an apartment and a job. Though in the future, I will need to explore other possibilities (including possibly returning to the U.S. if the economy improves and if there will be some good opportunities for me out there). To put it simply, I go where the money is. Currently I'm doing fine here, so I'm here for right now.

ah I see. Well, that is a shame that nobody will do anything about the issue, and that simply running away is a good option.

I'm happy you are doing alright, right now.

Economic issues run everywhere, but as Russia's economy is increasing and people in Canada and US are losing jobs, you don't see them running away. I wonder why?

Edit: Gee, I guess Russianlynxy was correct.....

The issue is in the people. Its the people that make Russia what it is today. The mentality is much different from people living in the West.

Regarding people not leaving after losing their jobs, it could be because they don't have options available in other places (like I did) and because they might have access to family support, unemployment benefits, and studying at college/university.

No, trust me, that isn't the reason. As for people being the issue, that falls in line with everywhere else. It is a shame that you have to deal with mob and other ****, but that is part of life, until people do something about it. And yes, I am aware mentality are different, because people out west have a backbone and willing to stand up in what they believe in. I think Russia was the same at one point. Wonder where it all went wrong? End of SU?

Hey dude, I hope the best for you. Ever think of opening a restaurant in Canada? I would definitely go to it. We need more small businesses, as they are kinda depleting here as well.
