I know a dude who's doing a Master's in Maastricht who didn't need ANY Dutch. But I suppose it's the same in Canada though there are still plenty of people going into the trades because it pays insanely well and it costs next to nothing (the gov't subsidizes much of the costs and the salary). Whereas us, the idiots in Uni pay through our noses and still make less than them when we get out. The difference is we get a nice office and we'll make more than them in about 5 years.

RSone, what's the difference between UvA and VUA? Are there two Unis in A'dam with similar names?

I'm so tempted to move to Canadialand. I visited a friend on a gap year there and loved every minute of it.

Problem is out whole education system is confused at the moment. So many people have it drilled into them you have to attend university and Labour encouraged this (they wanted 50% of people to attend university). All of secondary school/college revolves around (British) University applications. Vocational courses were seen as a failure/not as respectable for some reason. Thus we have thousands of unemployed graduates, a massively oversubscribed university system with huge costs and a desperate shortage of people with trades.
Does the UK have any respectable online universities? I'm studying at one right now..Wish I knew about them from the start. Easily compatible with a part-time job and as you pay per module, very affordable.

Move here in general? It may sound a bit weird but do make sure you go through a winter and/or a summer before you commit to anything.

The only one I'm aware of is The Open University. No idea how respectable the resulting degree is if I'm honest. Opinions vary.

I dunno exactly what the requirements are, but that's what Corrupt told me on steamchat when discussing a friend of his thinking about studying here.

Amsterdam has two universities. UvA=Universiteit van Amsterdam=University of Amsterdam
VU=Vrije Universiteit=Free University(as in freedom from Church and State, as it was founded by an Orthodox Protestant)

The UoA is the older(though depending on what date you recognize as the founding, not by much) and larger one

Then there's also the HvA, or the College of Amsterdam, which recently merged with the HES Amsterdam, or the Amsterdam school of Higher Economics, also a College. It's still called the HvA, though, and InHolland college(some sort of freak merger of a number of colleges throughout the country that were seperate about a decade and some odd years ago) also has locations in Amsterdam.

Well at UVA you can do Liberal Arts and Sciences (BSc/BA) or Economics and Business (BSc) which are taught in English, otherwise you have to pass 'Dutch as a second language (NT2) which can take up to a year (unless you're German)

I would, but seeing how I'm planning to hightail it outta here as soon as possible, it may prove a bit hard to do.

In all seriousness though, you could try doing a semester or two here (basically the winter one and if you wanna experience the stifling heat and humidity the summer one as well) to see how you'd cope with the winter. I'm saying this because this semester I had the chance to work with some great exchange students from UK, NL and AUS and they were all shocked. The NL girl especially cannot wait to leave because it was so cold compared to what she's used to.

Thanks mate For my Master's (which I'll do eventually) I'm looking at the Netherlands but I may take my business to Groningen because my Uni has a partnership with them and it may be easier to get my degree recognized there.

What's another year in a lifetime? Plus, language skills are always a good thing. Learn as many as you can.

True. I'd rather do a year's dutch and then a 3 year degree than waste a year doing a random job and applying for the same 3 year course in the UK.

Well I'm in Business Management and so they were from similar programmes in their respective countries and yes, they were all in 3rd year. I suppose you need to verify with your own uni and see if any of the Unis here are on their approved list or whatever it's called then make your respective choice.

Fuuuuuuuuuu. I have Jdownloader active on my desktop, downloading a split file. Everytime the IP lease runs out, the thing requires a new captcha(bot protection on the filehost's end) but I forget to keep my monitor switched on so half the time I don't notice another captcha request notification, which makes for a lengthy downloading process :P
