PAYE is a ripoff, people are paying their taxes long before they are due.

I just put out some bird seed for the overwintering birds, after adding high-powered chili oil to keep the squirrels at bay.

Out of boredom, I had a look at what your average Amsterdam canal house would cost. Not even that much compared to the more upperclass neighbourhoods in 't Gooi...But still...Holy sh1t.

Canal house as in a boat house on the canal or a house next to the canal?

Those old buildings next to all the canals. Some are literally as old as our country.

A friend of my Mom bought one over the course of 30-40 years, floor by floor.
It has a ton of problems and the maintenance costs are quite substantial.

Yeah. But still..Wouldn't it be totally friggin awesome to live in a house on De Singel that, say, used to be owned by Rembrandt's son? lol

Better live in the country, with a Rembrandt on the wall.

The house was totally awesome. That is for damn sure (and coincidentally it was on de Singel)
aside from initail costs, I wouldn't do it based on maintenance costs, etc. unless all the structural issues, etc. had already been taken care of before hand.

I bet any herenhuizen without significant structural issues carry an insane pricetag, if they're on the market at all. A single floor is expensive enough already, imagine what a house would cost as a single lump sum purchase.

I'm kinda digging this one.. http://www.funda.nl/koop/amsterdam/h.../fotos/#foto-1

Sweetly renovated, spacious as hell, nice location, etc.

    Not exactly cheap though.
