There's nothing wrong with a fixed gear, hell my 'grandpa' bike has a fixed gear, but the lack of any sort of mechanical braking on many of these bikes is dumb as ****. Even if you're only doing like 20 kp/h, having to mess around with skidding(if you ride clipless) and crank resisting is never gonna stop you as dead in your tracks as a simple caliper brake. Brakes have been part of bikes for a loooong time, and I really don't see any aesthetic value in a 'clean' frame. Fixed gear, brakeless bikes belong in a velodrome.
I ride a hardtail 29er with disc brakes. Its good enough on the road.
You just reminded me that a couple days ago when on my way home I stopped at the convenience store. On my way out with my decked out mtb in hand, I got a dirty look frome some kid on a fixie. I swear it was that same look a guy with a big suv gets from a Prius driver, Lol.
You can get a Speedfox frame for about €750. In fact, that was the only price i've found for a bare frame, most of them are pre-built deals, and I want to do my own build, particularly because it would likely be cheaper and I could use some of my current parts should I want to. New MTB is in the planning because I'd like to switch to a full suspension. I've owned a hardtail for a couple of years now and I just feel the people around me using fullies have a certain advantage in XC riding, especially because you can lock modern front AND back suspension.
