Besides isn't it true that "Free" though they were the North didn't really want them and therefore the creation of ghettos was rife and as a result a lot of the "free" slaves were actually in a worse of position. Let's remember not every slave was whipped and hung. Most were well looked after. Lets be honest a weak underfed slave was no good to anyone.
