Besides isn't it true that "Free" though they were the North didn't really want them and therefore the creation of ghettos was rife and as a result a lot of the "free" slaves were actually in a worse of position. State to state. In my state, like many others, the Castle law applies, and I can and will stroke you if you happen to prance into my home. In Texas, you can and will get stroked by a neighbor of a homeowner who observes you breaking into his neighbor's house, even if you are told not to. True story.
