I'd rather have a firm grasp on reading and writing skills. I don't need to multiply large numbers in my head. I do need to communicate well. I do need to have strong comprehension skills.

I had a rather eclectic mix of teachers in high school. My first Spanish teacher would tell us weirds stories. I remember him discussing whether or not it would be feasible to have an extra set of test.icles implanted into your buttocks to experience stronger orgasms. He was also our lookout when we smoked in the bathrooms. My second Spanish teacher was a chick from Costa Rica. She showed us Spanish language soft core p.orn in class. She didnt keep her job long.

Finally someone I can talk to(Uni student English, so i'm probably the one doing the horribe writing, if you ask my lecturers)
Grammar and translation classes at the start of the year were funny. You'd think that people enrolled in an English bachelor would have a satisfactory base knowledge of the language, but some of the translations(from Dutch to English) were downright funny.

My sister is in Seoul at the moment, studying abroad. One of her electives is a taekwondo course(don't know if it awards credits or not)so I suspect I will not be able to mess with her and get away unscathed once she's back home

@Farmgirl: If you're having essay/paper woes, consider getting Norton's Little Seagull Handbook and making excerpts available to your students. We (have to) use it as a reference work. It has chapters on style, sourcing and correctly crediting, formatting, etc.

Good morning. 8:30 already and I have the urge to punch people through the Internet.

Maybe I should go back to the "If it's something that you can't fix, don't worry over it" motto.

Yikes! Majoring in a second language would be difficult!

We start English in elementary, and most of us get German and French as well during at least part of HS as well(depending on the level, I think) Most Dutchmen speak reasonable English, and the two languages are more similar than you might think at first glance.

I have been taught, without much success, German since Elementary school and French since i was in HS.
However due to my constant exposure to English i have mastered it farther then the two previously mentioned languages without learning it in school.
