It was also called island of the rabbits. Actually it has nothing to do with rabbits. The latin name was Insula leporum, and you translated this either from lepus, rabbit or from lepor, gem.

I found today on a Hungarian blog an interesting Dutch town, Giethorn. I want to go there someday.
Only a bicycle and footpath go through it, the main 'roads' are waterways there (most of the bridges are privately owned). You can get there from Steenwijk, the nearest town.
