I recently started collecting Russian mechanical watches - usually you can get good quality for a reasonable price there if you go for used ones.
The old Russian movements like for example the 3133 are built with Swiss machinery after the Swiss sold these in the 60s or 70s to the Soviets cause they thought Quartz watches were the future when they came up
You can also get good quality watches with Japanese movements - Miyota or Seiko mostly. Just stay away from Chinese watches
Or you go for Quartz / battery... these are of course cheaper than mechanical ones.
What Russian brands would you people recommend?
Yes - although nearly all Russian watches are labled as PoljotsJust yesterday I ordered my second Poljot Aviator via ebay

You can get new ones for about half of the retail price on ebay
Left: Poljot Aviator with Japanese Miyota movement (got that for about 80 €, new), Right is a slightly older but basically unused Poljot Buran chrono.. for about 70 € via ebay, too.
Saved about 100 € on each compared to the retail prices.
What else do we have... Raketa.. these were more or less standard watches.. but they have many 24hr dials... if you like this. Only old and new old stock as I think they are not in production anymore.
Sekonda is a British brand using Russian movements. its similar to Raketa... but only get old ones like pre 1990 - new ones are said to be of not so great quality as they seem to have switched to Chinese movements.
Those two are mostly rather simple designs though.
Next to Poljot there is also Vostok with for example Vostok Amphibia divers watches of which there are lots to find as well. They are very cheap to get for around 30-40 €
There is also a newer brand called Vostok Europe which has some very nice designs - its a Lithuanian brand using Russian Vostok movements. But a bit pricier.
Excellent, thank you both.
Will spend some quality time today browsing ebay i think.

Yes that one looks nice... ususally it should not be a problem to get this for $250-$300 if you can find it in an auction (as basically for all watches of this reseller).
Ohhh, how much for the first one may i ask?
it was about 78 € I think via ebay.
saw the same one on a watchforum go for 115 € last month though.
I've been extremely happy with my Luminox. I've had it since early 2001, and have used it while on military and law enforcement duty, hiking, shooting, swimming in the ocean, and other rough activities. I've gone through a couple of batteries and three or four wristbands, but the watch itself has been extremely resilient.
well, i'm really satisfied with my Suunto Vector, nevertheless i'm always looking for nice watches....i caught this one
here the whole pic....http://www.flickr.com/photos/isafmed...in/photostream
can somebody id the watch?
