Hi,
There is an absolutely fascinating scholarly work recently translated from Hebrew into Engish. Its by Dani Asher (2009). despite a slightly dry academic style, It is by far, the best work I have ever read on the 1973 conflict. the book in question is -
The Egyptian Strategy for the Yom Kippur War. by McFarland and Company.
The book goes into intricate detail and although it points out that initial Egyptian success at a tactical and operational level were reversed, it has several uncomfortable observations for an Israeli reader. The book makes clear that although by the end of the war, Israel had tactical and operational superiority, Egypt had won on the grand strategic or political level. Egypt went into battle with limited objectives, achieved them superbly and although at the end, bettered by the IDF on the battlefield, could claim with justification to have won a victory. After all, the actual war from Egypt's perspective was to achieve a strategic, political objective. For Israel, it was above all to survive and secondly inflict tactical and operational defeat on its opponents. Both sides can claim to have succeeded.
To quote from Asher's conclusions -
"In the end, the Egyptian army accomplished the majority of its missions and contributed to the attainment of the goal that the president had defined. The Egyptians limited moves resulted in military achievments, and later political ones, both during and after the war."
cheers

Marsh, I am hoping that this stays mainly a photo thread and discussion on the war....not the political aspects. So far any discussion on who won, only dragged this thread down. Tactics, troop movements, etc is what makes this thread. If you want a discussion on who won, you can open a discussion thread in the appropriate section of this thread.
I'm annoyed by the fact that this thread focuses mainly on the Israeli-Egyptian part of the war.. The southern front for the Israelis.
The Golan part offers many interesting stories and information.
To the Hebrew speakers at least, if you're a book reader.. I recommend Aviram Barkai's book 'על בלימה'. Provides a really moving and interesting story telling of the 188th Brigade part in blocking the Syrian offensive, and later the counter-attack into Syria.
Roy, probably because we don't have any Syrian members. With our Egyptian members, like you, they are interested in the part of the War that their country was in. This is not mean, Israeli members can not post photos of the Northern part of the War with Syria.

You're probably right.
Wish we had Syrian members..
