Or is it part of anti-G equipment or lifejacket maybe?
I didn't know that fighter pilots wore flack vests ! does anyone has any info on this ?

Better question: Why the heck is he wearing a oxygen mask on the ground ?
And why is his visir down while he's on the ground reading a map...
Yes, it is a flack vest, I have one...... but my question is why is he wearing it ? or is it just for the photo since he is also wearing all his equipment on the ground while reading a map !
If its true thats rather silly. I mean if the pilot gets hit by anything thats used to bring down aircrafts even at extreme ranges no flakjacket is going to save him.
But it could as well be, after all the bomber crews did use flak jackets (suits even..) back in ww2 already, but the threats we "bit" diffirent..
That's not true at all. Transport-airplane crews and helicopter crews also wear bulletproof vests or flakjackets. Fragments from explosive AA-ammo and sharpnel from missiles can be stopped with these vests so it might save your life.Originally Posted by Uninen
But I've never seen a fighter-pilot wear one. I guess it's worn on the ground just in case the base get's hit by mortar fire or anything like that. I don't believe it's actually worn when flying.
I was thinking in lines of 12,7 to 57mm AP shots, no flakvest is going to save anybody from those, not even at extreme ranges. Also to be effective against AAA-HE / SAM / AAM fragments the shots have to be ineffect misses, and we dont try to miss the target, but rather hit it to the fullest..
My thought, it's impossible to add some random gear and then still fit "in" your ejection seat. It's not a car, cockpits or ejection seats and your life supporting gear are like "tailor made".Originally Posted by Frost
He seems in somekind of alert status. That's why he could be outside and got all his gear on. And in the same lline of thoughts it could be required to have a flak vest on in an operational/war(?) zone when outside.
I think he's a poser. Base security or something having a laugh.
Where is this photo from anyway?
maybe they are using some extra protection when doing this ..........
(notice in the 3rd pic how he is actually breaking the glass)

would look even better with a life-vestOriginally Posted by Uninen
He's probably on alert status or something.
Discovery had a show called "Wings" about aircraft, and one episode covered the "Juvats" fighter squadron at Kunsan, South Korea. The USAF Viper pilots there wore PASGT armor and NBC masks around their waist when transiting to their planes. They lived in a near-war status all year round as part of the readiness training.
