    'Jumbo' Fire Force
    Many thanks.
Do you have anything about the Rhodesian air force training your air force during the 40's? I take it they were trained by the RATG. If so then I flew in gliders from one of the old RATG airfields just outside Gweru. It was called Moffat airfield and now is the home base to the Midlands Gliding Club.

Here's a quote from our AF webpage:

The Hellenic Air Force used many variations of the T-6, both British- and American-built models. During the 2nd World War Greek pilots were trained using British-built Harvard Mk.Is at aviation academies in Rhodesia. source

I have a complete written copy of the transcript but it is too big to post on the forum.
    Here's the whole thing in mp3 form (25mins, 57mb):

Two articles on the Rhodesia Air Training Group. Most of the instructors (and students) were from the UK but some from Rhodesia. The RATG was part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan which also took place in Canada, Australia, South Africa and the US. The Southern Rhodesia Air Force was subsumed into the RAF during the war. Several squadrons were designated as "Rhodesian" but often because of casualties and aircrew finishing tours they contained many non-Rhodesians.

There were three squadrons in the RAF to carry the name of Rhodesia in their title. The one you have mentioned (which Ian Smith flew in). Tis squadronoperated in North Africa and the Med.
    The other 2 are:
266 (Rhodesia) squadron - flying Typhoons.
44 (Rhodesia) squadron) - flying Hampdens then Lancasters. They were the first squadron to receive Lancasters and with 97 squadron took part in the first Lancaster raid - target Augsburg. This squadron gained the name Rhodesia in its title '" in recognition of that country's generous donations to the war effort. This was particularly appropriate as about a quarter of the squadron's personnel were Rhodesian.'
