Maybe this particular German was issued a Mauser rifle, and wanted something more high-speed for CQB? That he is holding his "potato masher" in his hand indicates that to me.

But yeah, I don't doubt what you are saying, but I was just thinking about this particular photo. It's also interesting to note of course that the Germans were supposed to make a copy of Sten Mk II, but with the magazine angled downwards.

fair one but what designers make and what soldiers like more often than not are very different.above is basically the m3 grease gun.
but as you said if i was doing fibua i would rather have a sten than a rifle

Yeah but look at the Y-Straps, they're the Luftwaffe model without the D-rings for the A-Frame, also the camo jackets have the distinct luftwaffe fielddivision cut.

Interesting... I think thats a Mk. V (going off the forward sight, which was to allow for a bayonet) and it came out in 1944, so it was brand new at the time of the picture. It might have even had a forward downward handgrip on it.

    Edit: spelling of sight

these are british freicorps members of the waffen ss(note the small union jack),they were tricked in pow camps into joining there were roughly 20 of them they had a cushy life apparentley where they were based they were superstars and all the women wanted a british boyfriend.
they are rumoured to have fought at the battle of berlin but this is just a rumour if any one else has any more info......

I dunno if they were tricked into it...

It was mostly Brits in that unit, but there were also some Canadians an I think a few Aussies in it aswell.

Yea, theres rumors of them taking off their freicorps insignia, sheild, etc an joining up with another W-SS unit an fighting with them in Berlin. Most members went west an surroundered to the allies though.
