It was forbidden to serve in Wehrmacht and SS for German women. German policy to women - "Die Kirche, die Kueche, die Kinder".
But they was like "Helferinnen des Heer"..., civil service in SS...

Military men serve in army. Civil work in army. It's a difference (one of).
For example. In the Russian army there are military doctors and civil doctors. Military doctors serve and have military ranks. Civil doctors work. They have no military ranks. They not a member of Russian Army. They have different duties, posts, salary.
Or an example. I am dismissed(retired) from army on pension by old, but I was arranged to work on military base with my mil colleges. I'm civil, haven't rank... If will be war I'll be near military. But I'll be in Army not like military man. Women in Waffen SS same...
Women performed auxiliary work in Waffen SS. I don't know it word in Eng, but in Rus it mean " ne kadrovye"(не в кадре, не кадровые).
