The prestigious Sorbonne University in Paris was the setting for violent clashes between student demonstrators and riot police.

Officers armed with teargas and batons stormed the building to remove around 200 protesters and were involved in running battles outside.

More than 20 people were arrested in the pre-dawn raid and several injured. Some students had been holed-up for three days to protest proposed employment laws which will make it easier for firms to fire young people without explanation.

Streets outside the university -at the heart of student riots in 1968 - were littered with debris after the operation.

Officers had to smash through makeshift barricades to eject campaigners. The demo was mirrored in universities across France.

French education minister Gilles de Robien has accused students of "odious acts", including wrecking books and equipment. However, student leaders fear more violence if authorities continue to use force.

Army Aviation troops bound for Afghanistan
More than one hundred members of the Australian Army 5th Aviation Regiment were farewelled on 13 March 2006 by the Minister for Defence, Dr Brendan Nelson MP, and the Chief of Army, Lieutenant General Peter Leahy, as the soldiers prepared to leave for Afghanistan.

The soldiers will deploy to Afghanistan as part of Australia’s ongoing commitment to the international coalition against terrorism.

The soldiers will be responsible for the operation of two Australian Army Chinook Helicopters that are being sent to the Middle East.

The Chinooks and their crews will provide air mobility support to the Australian Special Forces Task Group operating in Afghanistan.

The Defence personnel and their helicopters that are based in Townsville, will be utilised in the movement of troops, equipment and aero-medical evacuation.

The helicopters have gone through extensive upgrades including enhanced Electronic Warfare Self Protection equipment, crew and passenger protection and advanced communication capabilities.
