KRI Surabaya...new amphibious ship, locally built with assistance from South Korea, based on South Korean LPD design...

    Negative.
The first two LPD, KRI Makassar-590 & KRI Surabaya-591 were built in Korea. The 3rd & 4th then are supposed to be built by PT PAL (anybody can update the progress ?).

    [quote]
The first two units are built in Busan, South Korea and the remaining two at Indonesia's PT PAL shipyard in Surabaya.
On 19 October 2006, the first of the two Indonesian-built units, was laid down in a ceremony by Admiral Slamet Subiyanto, Chief of Staff, Indonesian Navy

It has one or more full operating theatres, medical teams with doctors & surgeons, & hospital beds (can't tell exactly how many).
Most likely the ship color won't be (& can't be) changed into white. The red-cross sign can be portable.

Now back to my question, can we shoot this LPD ?
yes, the enemy can shoot the LPD. especially KRI Makassar and KRI Surabaya... why, coz they are not hospital ship. they are strictly Amphibious Assault Ship. but right now, those LPD's are unarmed...

the hospital ship of indonesia Navy is KRI dr.Suharso (former KRI tanjung Dalpele). this is also LPD... but she's armed with bofors 40mm and 2 canon 20mm...

see pics... with large red cross.. pics taken during TNI's wargame..

Those ships sure are really big. These LPD's are in urgent need of a sophisticated defense systems... If that doesnt come as a realization, they'd just be a huge defensless slow moving target just waiting to be shot at.

Thanks for the good news Karbol.
Oke, its a VSHORAD capable to shoot down very low and slow flying objects from a short range, so in case we are attacked by OPM with Cessna's, we can defend ourselves. But at least we have a replacement for the BAe Rapiers yg kadaluarsa.

Hmm, Rapier is a SHORAD-system, if you want to replace it with another SHORAD, Jernas is a logical choice. Same manufacturer, better capabilities.( JERNAS provides defence against unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles, and fixed and rotary wing aircraft. The Rapier MkII missile is capable of engaging supersonic, low level, high manoeuvrability aircraft, at a maximum range of 8 km.) A better choice is maybe 2S6M Tunguska, longer range, up to 10km.
Even better is Pantsir S1 or Tor M1, ADS which are capable of enganging tactical cruisemissiles like Tomahawk at a range up to 12.000m at an altitude of 6000m(Tor M1) or 8000m(Pantsir S1).

A cheaper alternative is the LD-2000B, also on order by Indonesia.
