I'm looking to buy this pistol for home / self defence.

I do not want to buy anything else than a 9mm parabellum ( 9 X 19mm ) because of the increase in power, my wife must also be able to use it without being scared of it and she is quite small.

In my experience, they are alright, but for the money, you can do better.
can i do better with a Glock ?
Try out both, and find out which suits you better.
The Beretta usings a hammer system, so the trigger should be slightly crisper on the let-off at single-action. On the other hand, there's a long initial pull for the first shot.
The Glock is striker fired, and no Glock I've ever tried had that sweet feel.Why not try the new Smith and Wesson M&P? It's got the best striker fired trigger I've ever tried.
Well the advice I (we) give everyone is to buy what is the most comfortable for you. That includes how it feels in hand and how well you shoot it. If the Beretta is best for you, great. Personally, I would go with a Glock or a SIG.

I shot the 92 before good weapon but I prefer HK
If you're going to get a Beretta, stick with steel. No point in getting almost the same pistol but with a polymer frame. If it's the light rail that you want, look into the M9A1 or possibly the Vertec. As for Glocks and other DAO pistols, I like the option of choosing single or double action...I prefer steel too if you didn't notice.
PS-Something else to consider, with a brand-new design, it's going to be hard to find accessories for it (grips, holsters, etc)
9MM's
Beretta M92's are good to shoot, accurate with okay recoil and muzzle flip. The grip is kind of fat for small hands though. Glock's and HK's feel square and boxy in the hands, very good pistols though. Check out a Sig P226R-very ergonomic. Go to your local gun store and look at your top pics, feel how they are in your hand. Try to go to a local range too and see how they fire. For home def. check out tactical lights to mount on your pistol. . . (Railed pistols are cool).
Oh yeah, also-TAKE YOUR TIME! Do a lot of research and actually hold and shoot your top pistol pics. In the end you want to be happy, not regretful and kicking yourself saying "why the freak did I get this gun!"

Me in a two gun competition we had last November.
I own a 92. I love the gun. Its a full sized frame though, so unless your wife has big hands, you might want to look at a different gun. If you want to stay with Beretta, try their Cougar.
There is also VERY little difference between the Beretta 92 and the Taurus version. The Taurus version costs less and still has all the things that make a 92 a 92.
And, like everyone else says, try several guns, get a feel rather than just window shopping for a purchase. The fact that you are buying a gun that your wife will use makes it a bit more cumbersome but still very doable...she needs to be there to try them.
This is NOT an M9.
It is a redesign of the 92 series.
The frame is NOT polymer, it is alloy, just like the other 92 series guns.
It has a new modular grip. You can get a smaller grip for smaller hands.
It has better visability sights. It has a rail. It has a 17 round magazine.
It looks to me that Beretta has fixed some of the stuff people have complained about over the years without ruining what was always a pretty good pistol.
For me the only problems with the old model were the big grips (I have small hands) and the sights were not the greatest.
If you can find it for a good price, you should buy it (after trying lots of different guns as everyone said above). I have two older 92 models, one 92S and one 92F. They are excellent guns that have given me many years of good service. But now I prefer Sigs.
