PANTSERHOUWITSER VOOR HET EERST INGEZET
De Pantserhouwitser 2000 is sinds gisteren voor het eerst ingezet in Afghanistan. Nederlandse militairen gebruiken het 155 mm geschut tegen Talibanstrijders in Kandahar, de provincie naast Uruzgan. Daar hebben Nederlandse infanteristen ook de vooruitgeschoven basis Martello van de Canadezen overgenomen.
De nieuwe gemotoriseerde vuurmond van de landmacht wordt ingezet ter ondersteuning van de Operatie Medusa. Daarbij bestrijden circa tweeduizend NAVO- en Afghaanse militairen enkele Taliban-bolwerken in de regio Panjwayi in Kandahar. Op verzoek van de NAVO-commandant van het Regional Command South in Zuid-Afghanistan heeft Nederland besloten twee Pantserhouwitsers ter beschikking te stellen aan de Canadezen.
De tweede PzH2000 staat schietklaar in Kandahar. De kanonnen zijn bedoeld voor de beveiliging van de Nederlandse kampen in Tarin Kowt en Deh Rawod. Gezien de geplande levering van de PzH2000 zorgt een extra mortiergroep momenteel voor de beveiliging van de bases. De Pantserhouwitser zal die taken gaan overnemen.
De inzet in Kandahar dient ook het belang van de Nederlandse militairen. Door de provincie loopt de belangrijkste aanvoerroute voor de twee Nederlandse bases in Uruzgan. Halverwege ligt de vooruitgeschoven Canadese basis Martello, die belangrijk is voor het zeker stellen van de veiligheid van de route. Door onder meer die taak over te nemen, ontlast Nederland de Canadese troepen en blijft de bescherming van de eigen konvooien op peil.

The Dutch PzH2000NL howitser have been issued first time yesterday (monday 4-9-2006). Dutch soldiers used the 155mm cannon against taliban fighters in Kandahar, the province next to Uruzgan. Dutch infantry also took over a Canadian Forward Operating Base (F.O.B). This to protect the Dutch convoys from Kandahar Airfield to Tarin Kowt.
The 2nd PzH2000 is combat ready at Kandahar. Concerning the planned delivery of the PzH2000 a extra mortar group will take over base defence at Tarin Kowt and Deh Rawod, untill the howitser arrive.
It's Panzerhaubitze, not Pantserhouwitser. Nobody ever gets it right.
