    hey guys

im seriously contemplating joining the armed forces once i become a dutch citizen.. (ive got a british passport and because i lived in the Netherlands for more than 5 years before my 18th birthday im eligible to dual nationality ;D)

i was wondering.. does anyone have experience with what to do first.. i saw on werkenbijdelandmacht.nl that there are "meeloopdagen" where you can spend like 4 days with a part of the armed forces to get a feel for what it really is, oh and yea ill stop by the banenwinkel of the landmacht

With a British passport why would you rather join the Dutch instead of goin to something like Sandhurst?

...just curious. To me the british seem superior in experience and are globally recogniced as a first class army.

Because then he'd have to move back to the UK?

The British are no more experienced than the Dutch armed forces (the Netherlands and Great Britain share a history of fighting eachother, with wars won and lost on both sides). Not being recognized as one doesn't mean they aren't first class. Military training in western/northern Europe is pretty much equal, quality wise, anyway. Also, aren't the British armed forces suffering from some terrible budget cuts at the moment?

Well in modern warfare the British are definately more experienced but I agree on the training part.

Here are a few pictures I found in a photo album at home. Sorry about the poor quality, but they didn't have digital cameras back then.

Niels I am not even going to debate with you whether the Dutch and the British have the same amount of experience in modern history (i.e. from 1907 onwards). The stupidity of that would just be beyond acceptable levels.

However I do agree with you on training. But image wise, owing a quarter of the globe at one point, IMO the British stand stronger when looking through the eye of the general public.

As for him having to move back. Well the army is not a job but a lifestyle. So the significance of moving house is overshadowed by the choice of which Queen to serve

i know that i can also go to e.g. sandhurst.. i just dont think that is worth moving to england for when everything i know and love is here in holland =) the only reason that i have a british passport is because my father is british and when i was born in south africa he didnt want me to grow up with a south african passport

but anyway i agree on the fact that the brits have more experience in operations than the dutch.. i asked a army recruiter the same question and he admitted this.. but he also said that the level of training in most western european armies was the same

(by the way.. does anyone know many % of the budget in the UK is spent on armed forces? i know that in the netherlands it was less than 2% when the european advice was at least 2.5%..)

Right, point taken, I stand corrected.

The Netherlands; Military expenditures - percent of GDP:1.6% (2004)
    (source; cia the world factbook)
The UK; Military expenditures - percent of GDP: 2.4% (2003)

And I believe it's NATO who recommends the 2.5% goal.
